Why is there a free plan at all?
Because your vault must not depend on us. Free gives you the same encryption and a recovery path that works with open-source tools alone — if we vanished tomorrow, your data is still yours. Paying is for convenience, never for security.
Does paying more make my vault more secure?
No. Every plan uses identical cryptography. Higher tiers don't strengthen the lock — they keep your vault alive when you're gone and make recovery simple. Even Concierge never lets us see your data or hold enough keys to open it.
What happens if Lastnote shuts down?
Every vault ships with a Recovery Codex: the full spec and a single-file Python script that decrypts it with no Lastnote, no network, no account. A trustee with a threshold of keys hands it to any developer. We test exactly this on every release.
Why per vault, and why annual only?
A vault is the unit that needs protecting, so it's the unit we price. Annual billing keeps a set-and-forget product simple — nothing monthly to watch.
