A useful next step
Help when you need it.
Plain answers for adding details, keeping keys and finding a way back in.
What are you trying to do?
See the starter checklist →Do I need everyone’s keys to add or change something?
No. Your owner passkey lets you open and update your organiser yourself. Family keys are a separate way to recover a saved copy. After an update, keep a fresh encrypted copy somewhere your chosen people can find it.
I’m not sure what to add.
Start with where one important original is kept, who has a spare key or the first person to call. The starter checklist gives you five practical prompts.
My passkey prompt was cancelled.
Cancelling does not mean your changes were saved. In the web app, keep the tab open and retry when you are ready. If a save had already started, check your account copy before repeating it.
I lost my phone or can no longer use my passkey.
First check whether your passkey provider lets you use it on another device. Use Recover owner access: sign in, use enough matching owner recovery keys and set up a replacement passkey. That flow needs Lastnote to be available and a supported passkey provider.
Can I recover if Lastnote has closed?
Yes, if you kept a current encrypted copy, enough matching keys and the independent recovery tool with its dependencies prepared. That route opens your saved information without Lastnote or an account. It does not create a new online account or passkey. Keep the file and tool as well as the keys.
A family key is missing.
The remaining keys work if enough distinct keys are still available. Lastnote cannot recreate a missing key for you. If you still have the complete private kit, it contains the original keys; keep the whole kit private and share only the intended holder’s key. If a key may have been copied, use the replacement-key flow to protect future information.
Does replacing keys stop someone opening an old copy?
No. An old encrypted file can still be opened with enough of its matching old keys. Replacement keys protect the newly encrypted copy and future updates. Give holders the new keys and make the new recovery copy available; changing a name in the holder plan is not the same as replacing keys.
The saved recovery copy is out of date.
Open your details, save the latest changes, then save an updated recovery copy. Ordinary edits keep the same keys. A separate recovery practice checks that the keys actually open the copy. If you deliberately replaced your keys, use the new copy and its matching new keys instead.
I am helping someone recover information.
Begin with their agreement or appropriate authority. Find the encrypted file, enough correct keys and the recovery tool. The independent route needs Python 3 and its cryptography package prepared. It does not require the owner to sign in.
